Jeffrey F. Ryan Lawyer – Why There Are No “Lone Wolves” in Law

Becoming the best at whatever you want to be in life is not an isolated journey. Regardless of occupation, calling, or goals, few people ever get to the top without at some point relying on others for support. What’s more, those that have discovered the power of teamwork are able to accomplish much more, with much fewer resources, than those who consider themselves lone wolves. This is true of most professions, and it is certainly true for lawyers. A single lawyer is able to handle smaller cases and workloads, often the least interesting or important cases or proceedings of a firm. But in order to take on more challenge, interesting, and ultimately important cases, teams of attorneys come together to share the caseload and its responsibilities.

For Jeffrey Ryan, solicitor, connecting with people is the heart of being a lawyer and this means connecting with his fellow attorneys as much as it means connecting with his clients. As a child, his family moved all over the United States and even to London. In each location, he had to figure out how to connect with new people and form relationships quickly. This skill of interacting with people is a large part of what motivated him to become an attorney and it is integral to his success. After graduating from university, Jeffrey Ryan attended the University of Santa Clara Law School, graduating with his Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 1986 and joining the State Bar of California in 1987.

His focus has always been on civil litigation, namely business litigation, employment litigation, trade secret and property litigation, insurance and bad faith litigation, and the negotiation of excellent severance packages for executives. His knack for connecting with people has led him to many prominent cases in which he worked hard to defend clients that were regularly up against much bigger opponents. For example, one of his biggest cases involved defending a whistleblower against their large Silicon Valley tech firm. The employee at the company came forward with evidence of ongoing fraudulent activity being conducted by the company against the United States government. Jeffrey Ryan and a team of other attorneys worked for more than five years on the case before it reached an eventual settlement in favor of their client. The settlement, $75.5 million, was one of the largest in the history of the False Claims Act, and couldn’t have been achieved by any single attorney.
